Heidi Montag filed for legal separation from husband and “The Hills” co-star Spencer Pratt on Tuesday (June 8), a court spokesperson confirmed to MTV News. Late last month, Montag moved out of the home she shared with Pratt; her rep confirmed the couple had split, calling it “a separation for now.”

Montag showed up to a Santa Monica, California, courthouse, where she filed the necessary paperwork, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the separation. The reality TV star has not filed divorce papers. But in filing for legal separation, Montag’s “earnings will become her separate property from the date of separation,” according to court papers published by TMZ.

Reportedly, Montag first tried to file papers in Malibu, but discovered there was no legal outlet in which to do so. TMZ further reported that the papers, dated June 8, were handwritten by Heidi, and she did so without assistance from a lawyer; a court representative confirmed to MTV News that Montag had filed for separation ex parte

“I needed some alone time,” the “Hills” star told People.com of the split from Pratt last month. “There are so many lies out there about me and I just needed space — even away from my husband. I had to get away from the lies my family and supposed friends are saying about me. It’s time to concentrate on myself.”

Montag has already found a new roommate, moving in with former “Laguna Beach” star and occasional “Hills” pal Jen Bunney. “I’ve always loved Spencer,” Montag said of her estranged hubby, adding, “but right now we’re working on things.”

While the couple have yet to tweet directly about their relationship troubles, Montag’s rep, Lexi Vonderlieth, told CNN in May via e-mail: “As you can imagine it is crazy right now. She’s trying to lay low the next couple days. What I can say is that it’s a separation for now, not divorce.”
